  1. Open the hood: Look for signs of maintenance to ensure the car has been cared for. Check the oil and transmission levels and make sure the fluids have been maintained. Lay down and look underneath the car both when it is off and when it is running to make sure nothing is leaking.
  2. Check the tires: Make sure the treads are even across all four tires and that there is enough tread left to give you traction while you are driving. Check the tire pressure as well to ensure safety.
  3. Listen carefully: Listen for any noises that don’t sound normal. Any rumblings, squeaking tires when you press on the brake, or clunking noises could be a cause for concern. Turn off the radio so that you can hear the car better. Switch up your speed so that you can listen for issues at both low and high speeds.
  4. Take your time: Don’t be afraid to drive around for a few extra miles to ensure you know what you are getting into. You need to make sure that this vehicle is going to suit your needs, so drive until you are confident of your decision.
  5. Get a second opinion: If you are not comfortable looking under the hood or inspecting the body of the vehicle by yourself, talk to the seller and take the vehicle to a mechanic you trust to do the inspection for you.
