It is a fascinating thing that in such a bustling and populated country, that there can be some stretches of roads that see so few travelers. Often these desolate, untrodden paths are able to evoke strong emotions from travelers: Freedom, anxiety, peace, unrest, excitement, loneliness just to name a few.  While always polarizing, there is no doubt that feelings that arise from these brushes with solitude while travelling are undoubtedly real.  Here are some of the least traveled roads in America.  Visit some of these soon.

Dalton Highway, Alaska Route 11

One of the most untouched, unpaved, and unpredictable roads in America is not part of the contiguous 48.  Stretching as far north as the town made famous by Ice Road Truckers, Deadhorse (permanent residency numbers fluctuate between 25 and 50 people reportedly) sits on one end of the Dalton.  At the southernmost tip some 414 miles away lies the town of Livenwoood.  If you are looking for solitude, you will find it here.

US 50, Nevada

A list of lonely corridors would not be complete without taking some time to share the highway which has been named the “Loneliest Road in America” by Life Magazine in the mid- 1980s.  US-50, running east-west across the entire width of the state of Nevada had long been known for its sparsely traveled pavement and its boom-bust mining ghost towns.  With a wide variety of geography features with its forlorn charm, US 50 is a good place to go to not be found.

Bombay Beach, California

While it is not necessarily the road itself that is remote, this town which has been flooded out by the Salton Sea.  Left behind are sand filled houses, buses trapped up to their windshields in mud, and boats that have run aground on the shore.  Less than 300 people live in the municipality situated in the northwestern corner of Imperial County.  One has to take route 111.  The town is the lowest community in America sitting at 223 feet below sea level.
