Rain Driving Tips
We get our fair share of rain here in Seattle. Many would argue that we get way more than a fair share. On average, we have to jump over puddles and hide under umbrellas 150 days out of the year. So at Seattle Metro Used Cars, we have come up with a list of driving tips to help you arrive at your destination safe and dry. Dodge dangerous situations by following these suggestions.
Stop skidding before it starts:
Wet roadways and slick surfaces lead to serious slippage. Excess speed is a huge no-no in these conditions. Many rain-induced accidents can be avoided if you slow down to fit the situation. Curves and turns in the road can magnify the the effects of rain on roads. Especially ease off the gas in these instances. When coming to a stop, allow for greater braking distances. Do not slam on the brakes, rather gradually bring the car to a stop.
“Slip slidin’ away” in a skid:
When in the midsts of a skid, things seems to speed up and your reaction time slow down. It is important to stay calm. Slowly ease off the gas and steer your vehicle in the direction you wish it to go. Cars without anti-lock brakes, avoid the urge to brake. Those with anti-lock brakes should use them while turning into the skid.
Hydroplaning?
Hydroplaning occurs when water at the front of your tires builds and your vehicle cannot push it out of the way fast enough. This creates a thin layer between the rubber of your tires and the road and can lead to losing complete control of your car. To avoid hydroplaning, keep your tires at the correct air pressure. Also make sure that your tires have good tread. And absolutely slow down in rainy conditions.
