Pre-owned cars are great for a number of reasons: Often, a well-maintained used vehicle can provide a better value than a brand new car; a pre-owned car is far more likely to fit into your budget if money is tight; insurance can be more affordable; and many times a you will be able to find a vehicle with more features for less when buying a used car instead of a base model of a new one.  However, it is far from true that all previously owned cars are created equal.  Especially in the case of teen drivers, there are certain options that are better than others–which is doubly true for a used automobile’s level of safety.  A list of safest used cars for teens according to the IIHS has been conducted.

As teens are more likely to be involved in fatal accidents due to inexperience in a variety of driving conditions, the IIHS has come up with some criteria for the ideal car that should help keep young drivers safer while on the road.

High horsepower should be discouraged because it can tempt younger drivers to drive at excessive speeds, which can increase the likelihood of an accident.  Cars that are bigger, such as small SUVs, can provide greater protection in the event of a crash when compared to a midsize car.  Electronic stability control (ESC) is a feature that improves the stability of a vehicle by determining and minimizing loss of traction by applying the brakes automatically to help steer the vehicle.  This is a safety feature which the IIHS encourages to be present in all vehicles for teen drivers.  The IIHS also list that top-safety rating should also take precedent when it comes to deciding on a car for a teen driver.
