UK Self-Driving Cars

The UK has officially sanctioned self-driving cars on public roadways.  The decision goes into effect in January 2015.  As if there needed to be yet another reminder of just how far auto technology has come, within five months automated vehicles without the benefit (or hindrance depending on how one looks at it) of a driver will be able to cruise around various test cities and communities around Britain.  While the measure is in place, it may be a little while before the passing of this implementation becomes practical.

Areas wishing to be designated a test spot need to apply and go through an applicant process.  Ultimately, only three cities will be chosen.  These government funded tests will last from a period of 18 and 36 months.

The UK is just the latest to join the trend in exploring the possibilities and implications driverless automobiles can deliver.  Japan and Sweden are other countries who have measures already in place to study the practicality and effectiveness of autonomous automobiles.  States at home, such as Florida, California, and Nevada have also picked out specific locales for studying self-driving cars.

With Hyundai’s recent stunt showing how responsive its self-adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assistance, and collision-sensing brake activation along with other innovations that essentially let the 2015 Genesis operate itself, it is becoming increasingly clear humans are no longer essential in the driving process.  One has to wonder what the ramifications are going to be: Will you still have to 16 to “drive” a vehicle?  How will vehicles be insured?  The only thing that is clear is that self-operating vehicles are the way of the future–which is coming closer and closer.

The impact of the self-driving vehicle may be one of the most strange and brilliant innovations technology affords people.  In theory, it will cut down on all accidents (maybe most importantly impaired or distracted driving incidents).  Seattle Metro Used Cars will monitor this new technology and bring you the latest when there is fresh information.
