How is a crossover different from an SUV?

Many times the words “crossover” and “SUV” are used interchangeably to describe similar vehicles. This can cause some confusion among people searching for a vehicle that are unsure which class it belongs in. So how is a crossover different from an SUV?

Choosing a crossover vs an SUV

In most situations, “crossover” is a term meant to refer to a vehicle smaller than an SUV. This is not always the case, but it is a good benchmark for comparing the two classes of vehicle. Crossovers tend to be based on car platforms, and are focused more on providing competitive fuel economy estimates while also offering an added element of storage space using an SUV-like body style.

Car shoppers should consider a crossover if they are searching for a vehicle that offers an added degree of versatility over a traditional sedan, but still delivers respectable fuel economy ratings.

SUV platforms are based on larger cars, or trucks. These larger vehicles are popular due to their increases towing and hauling capabilities. An SUV will offer more-powerful engine options than a smaller crossover. If towing or hauling is more your forte, a larger SUV should do the trick. The larger size of these vehicles does mean that fuel economy ratings are usually not as good as on a smaller crossover.
