Are there cars that can drive by themselves?

Autonomous technology is getting more and more popular every year. Many manufacturers are working on producing cars that need a minimum of driver involvement, and many of those leaps and bounds in technology are producing great new safety features that can make life better on the road for drivers and pedestrians alike. But are there cars that can drive by themselves? What is Cadillac Super Cruise?

Cadillac Super Cruise is a brand new feature that will be available this fall on the 2018 Cadillac CT6. Using LiDAR technology (which is similar to radar, but uses precision lasers instead of sound waves), GPS, real-time cameras and sophisticated sensing technology, Cadillac Super Cruise will allow the new Cadillac CT6 to maintain speed and steering in highway situations without drivers needing to keep their hands on the wheel at all times.

Is Super Cruise Autonomous Driving?

While Cadillac Super Cruise is a very cool new step forward when it comes to driver assistance features, it will not take the place of a driver. This technology will come with a built-in driver attention function. If the system detects that the driver’s attention is drifting, it will gently notify them.

“When we were developing Super Cruise™ we knew it was important to keep the driver engaged during operation. That’s why we’ve added a driver attention function, to insist on driver supervision,” said Barry Walkup, chief engineer of Cadillac Super Cruise, in a recent Cadillac press release.

This system is not yet available on the pre-owned Cadillac inventory here at Certified Autoplex, but when it is released this fall we anticipate that it will take at least some of the hassle out of highway commuting.
