Apache Trail (Under an hour from downtown Phoenix) — One of the most famous drives in the area is only a short drive from Phoenix, yet you can easily while away an entire day driving through the winding roads of this old stagecoach trail. Old ghost towns and eccentric shops dot the landscape, and it’s recommended that you drive a car with responsive handling. You know, like the 2014 Nissan Altima.
Petrified Forest, Holbrook, AZ (About 3 ½ hours from Phoenix) — Drive through the Tonto National Forest through rolling hills and marvelous landscapes, and enjoy the Holbrook-area attractions such as the Petrified Forest and the Painted Desert, both of which are beautiful in ways that are almost indescribable. An absolute visual feast.
Sedona, AZ (Two hours from Phoenix) — A great location for hiking and biking, the Red Rocks of Sedona feature beautiful sunsets and sunrises, and are also home to many festivals during the year. Visit the famed Chapel of the Holy Cross, or eat at the world’s only McDonalds to lack the iconic golden arches.
Tombstone, AZ (About three hours from Phoenix) — This one pretty much speaks for itself, doesn’t it? The OK Corral, the Earp brothers, Doc Holliday–the list goes on and on. The rugged frontier town still features many of the locations that have drawn visitors to Tombstone for almost 150 years, and definitely don’t miss going to the Boot Hill Cemetery, where many old west figures are buried.
Cave Creek, AZ (Less than an hour from Phoenix) — Great shopping, great dining, and great outdoor activities, Cave Creek truly has it all. Go horseback riding, dancing, or take a tour of an old mine. There are also many art galleries and a wide variety of restaurant options.
