Ahh…summer in Arizona. If there is anything better, we haven’t discovered it yet. It’s a great time for a road trip, and as with any great road trip, the ideal vehicle is essential as well. In that regard, might we suggest a convertible? The easy access to the interior, the wind in your hair, the top that requires extreme care and steadfast maintenance? Okay, the first two things are great, while the third might be seen as a hassle. So, what are the best ways to care for your convertible top? Here’s a brief rundown, from your friends at Avondale Nissan!

Convertibles Phoenix AZFor those with a cloth top: Most tops fall into cloth or vinyl tops, and although they are similar in function, they require different products to clean and care for. For a cloth top, make certain that the product you choose is intended for cloth surfaces, and use a medium brush to remove or loosen dirt and debris using the cleaner that you choose, following the directions on the bottle closely. Once you’ve removed all of the dirt using a brush, cleaner and a quick rinse, allow the roof to dry before adding a protectant. Make sure that the protectant is uniformly applied in a thin layer, and allow the roof to dry before folding up the roof for a turn down the interstate.

For those with a vinyl top: As we said, these aren’t markedly different from a cloth-top convertibles, with one key difference: they are much more prone to drying out and being damaged than a cloth top, at least if they aren’t cared for. For this reason, it’s crucial that you clean your vinyl top each time that your car is washed. Mildew is also more likely to form with a vinyl top, so make sure that your roof is allowed to dry completely before folding up. Taking just a few extra steps with your vinyl top will allow it to stay attractive and functional for many years ahead in the Arizona heat.

For those with vinyl windows: Vinyl windows generally are only offered on the rear windows these days, but because of our heat, they still require great care. All a person really must do is use a vinyl surface cleaner and polish–slightly different than the protector used on a roof–and you can expect to eliminate the yellowing and scratching that will happen over time.

All of these tips for caring for your convertible top are extremely easy to do, but they’re often overlooked. For any more information or to schedule a test drive in a convertible in our inventory, visit Avondale Nissan today!
