Designed at Kia’s California site, Kia’s auto show headliner that everyone has been waiting impatiently for has arrived. The 2017 Niro Hybrid Utility Vehicle has been revealed at the Chicago Auto Show in all of its hybrid glory. The “no-compromise” vehicle has both innovative styling and the best possible combination of fuel economy, functionality and driver experience.

The 2017 Niro joins the subcompact CUV market as unique but practical with never before seen features. Styled with Kia signature tiger nose grille, the resemblance to any other Kia Hybrid ends there. The Niro HUV has aggressively shaped headlights that compliment its low, wide and athletic stance and contours and the aluminum hood and round tailgate for an all around sporty look that is aerodynamic as well.

2017 Niro Fuel Economy

Powering the unique HUV is an all-new Kappa 1.6-liter GDI four-cylinder engine, engineered specifically for hybrid applications. The hybrid engine utilizes the gas engine in combination with a 43 horsepower tractive motor and 1.56 kWh Lithium Ion Polymer battery to reach a fuel economy of 50 MPG. With the high-voltage battery that has increased power and energy density, the Niro was able to be equipped with a smaller gas engine that maximizes fuel economy and reduces emissions.

2017 Niro Technology

A unique utility vehicle should have a unique technological suite, and that is exactly what Kia has done. The Niro will have all-new Eco driver assistance systems such as Kia’s first Coasting Guide and Predictive Energy Control system that coaches drivers on braking and acceleration to maximize fuel efficiency.

The newest version of Kia’s UVO eServices infotainment system will also be featured in the 2017 Niro complete with 14 telematics services, up to 8 GB of music storage and Wi-Fi tethering capability. Moreover, available in the Niro will be Android Auto and Apple CarPlay and wireless phone charging.

Kia Motors already has big plans for the hybrid utility vehicle following its reveal. The company plans to sell the 2017 Niro on a global scale by the end of this year with a presence in the US market happening early next year. Engineers have looked ahead to the Niro’s future and are planning to create a plug-in hybrid of the Niro in the years to come.
