Best Nature Parks and Hiking near Racine, WI

Living in Southeast Wisconsin is a mixed bag. On the one hand, you have plenty of amazing things to do during the summer, two gigantic metroplexes within a couple of hours’ drive and the beautiful shores of Lake Michigan. On the other hand, winter arrives and shuts down most outdoor plans (that aren’t snow-shoeing, cross-country skiing or shoveling) for about five months out of the year.

The passing of Labor Day and the beginning of the school year have made it undeniably clear that summer is at its end and that means fall is here! While winter may bring a literal and figurative freeze to the amount of time we can spend outdoors, fall gives us one last chance to get out and see the beauty that is all around us. It’s also one of the best times to do so as the brisk air and colored leaves on the trees invoke a pleasantness that neither summer or winter can muster.

Here are our favorite places to go during this “last chance to see things” time of year:

1. Richard Bong State Recreation Area – Kansasville, WI

With over 4,500 acres of woodland, wetland and prairie, the Richard Bong Recreation Area is one of our favorite places to go and spend a weekend afternoon that is both active and contemplative. Plenty of deciduous trees throughout the area allow you to see some of the brightest and most vibrant fall colors before they fall off and turn the area into a winter sports haven.

More information is available on the Wisconsin DNR website, which you can reach by clicking here.

2. River Bend Nature Center – Racine, WI

Right here in our hometown of Racine is the River Bend Nature Center, a preserve and educational outlet that’s dedicated to providing both environmental education and outdoor recreation. Fun activities here include kayak rentals, a woodland boardwalk trail and an amazing pavilion that can be rented out for events.

More information is available on the River Bend Nature Center website, which you can reach by clicking here.

3. Sanders Park – Mount Pleasant, WI

The size and residential location of Sanders Park makes it the perfect place to take a lunch break or hit after work for a stroll through the trail. You’ll see plenty of wildlife and experience the beautiful sights and sounds that accompany being in such a densely forested county park. If you like what you experience on a casual stroll through, you can camp at one of the park’s 23 campsites with picnic areas and limited electricity.
