Winter Driving Tips for the Milwaukee WI Area

We’re not exactly huge fans of the freezing temperatures that abide in the frozen tundra that is Wisconsin in the dead of winter, but we are accustomed to the pitfalls that can occur with these cold conditions on the highways and streets, and we’d like to be of help if you’re looking for a few tips.

Think one or more steps ahead.

  • When the weather is nice, there aren’t a lot of vehicles that will swerve out of control, but this is more common when an ice storm hits the Midwest and cars can’t grip the road.  Try to look ahead of the traffic directly in front of you to get a sense of what is happening.  If vehicles are swerving wildly up ahead, you need to be ready to stop.
  • In addition, checking the weather online or with a phone call to 511 before you get in the car can give you valuable information.

Bring warm weather supplies.

  • It might seem obvious, but it’s important to have the proper equipment to handle the cold and frosty conditions both outside and on the inside of your car.
  • Some warm weather standbys: Driving-appropriate gloves that keep your hands warm while still giving you some grip on the wheel, and a warm jacket or additional layers so you stay warm and attentive to the road.

Increase your braking distance.

  • When the weather is snowy and cold, vehicles typically take longer to stop since their brakes are a little frosty and traction is tougher with the slick surfaces.  Giving the vehicle in front of you more room than normal is smart in the winter.

Don’t use your cruise control when the weather is snowy or icy.

  • If you’re not aware of icy patches in the road, hitting the brake to stop the cruise control can make your car careen out of control.
